Kumon Maths & English

Kumon Fenham is a study centre in Newcastle upon Tyne that has been open since the beginning of 2012. The Instructor is Rukhsana Ali, who speaks fluent Bengali and understands Urdu. The centre offers Maths and English study programmes to students aged four to 18, who come from Fenham, West Denton, Elswick, Westerhope, and surrounding areas. Kumon was founded in 1958 in Osaka, Japan, by Toru Kumon, a high school maths teacher.

It has over 60 years' experience, 3.5 million students enrolled worldwide, operates in over 60 countries and regions, and has 22,300 Instructors worldwide. Kumon is the UK's largest supplementary education provider, with more than 2,500 students learning at over 20 study centres across Ireland. Kumon Fenham offers in-centre and online classes, and provides daily worksheets for at-home and in-centre learning. The centre has a family waiting area, an independent reading area, disabled access, free parking, and an early learners section.

Fenham's branch of Kumon, based at The Beacon on Westgate Road, follows the franchise's structured maths and English programme, with sessions run by an instructor named Rukhsana across the reviews on file. Timed practice under exam-style conditions is something reviewers return to, with several parents describing how their children became noticeably calmer and quicker when working through questions against the clock, a skill reviewers link directly to school test performance. Confidence is mentioned repeatedly too, including accounts of shy children who previously avoided answering questions in class becoming willing to put their hand up after a period of study.

Younger pupils feature heavily in the reviews, with several parents describing daughters and sons starting the programme around primary school age and progressing steadily through number work, times tables and reading. Teachers at the centre are described as patient and committed, with more than one reviewer thanking Rukhsana personally for her ongoing support. Sessions run on Friday early evenings and Saturday mornings only, a pattern that fits around the school week rather than replacing it, and several families describe this after-school and weekend structure as a convenient addition to their children's usual timetable rather than a disruption to it.
