Plymouth Tutors

Plymouth Tutors was founded by Chris Perkins, who holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of London, a PGCE from the University of Oxford, and an enhanced DBS disclosure. He has taught and tutored Chemistry and Drums in secondary and tertiary education in Plymouth since 1995. The centre teaches Chemistry, Physics, Biology, English, Maths, Psychology, Criminology, History, German, French, Spanish and Italian, plus music tuition in Drums, Keys and Music Production, and supports students with special educational needs such as dyslexia.

The wider team includes Phil Knight, BSc (Hons), DPhil (Oxon), QTS, a former Head of Science; Paul Blake, BSc (Hons), PGCE, QTS, formerly Head of Biology at Heles School; Sharon Perry, a certified IELTS examiner; and Helen Ryder, BA (Hons) Psychology, MSc, PGCE, QTS, who teaches A-Level Criminology and Psychology.

Plymouth Tutors, based in Tamerton Foliot, is run by Chris and Nuala, who between them cover eleven-plus preparation in maths and English as well as A-level chemistry. The small number of reviews describes a well-organised programme that balances direct teaching with practice, alongside a personal approach that adapts to each child's particular strengths. One parent describes their daughter's attainment and confidence improving noticeably during eleven-plus preparation, crediting Chris and Nuala's care and attention as much as their teaching methods. Another parent, whose son passed the eleven-plus after a single year of tutoring, describes both tutors as experienced, professional and patient with children.

A third review, from an A-level chemistry student tutored by Chris, describes complicated topics broken down clearly enough to make sense of, along with useful additional resources provided for independent study. Sessions run on weekday afternoons and evenings, with a shorter Saturday morning slot and no Sunday opening. The sample of feedback is small, yet the reviews consistently point to a tutoring partnership offering both eleven-plus preparation for younger pupils and subject-specific support at A-level, with a calm, structured approach and genuine care for individual children mentioned in each review submitted so far.
