About the company

Tom Caldwell is a private tutor in Plymouth. He holds a B.Ed (Hons), PGCE, and M.Ed. He has 20 years of teaching experience in Devon (Plymouth) and Cornwall. For 10 years, he was a maths specialist/coordinator and senior leader. He spent 4 years in the public sector as a Deputy Headteacher. He gained a PGCE in mathematics and a Masters degree in education. He was involved with the Cornwall maths hub. His family have lived in Plymouth for the past 23 years. He formed Woolwell JFC with Andy Barnes in 1998. In 2022, he stopped working in the mainstream school environment to concentrate fully on tutoring.

Tutoring is carried out at his family home in Hartley (Central Plymouth). The main services are 11+ tutoring and maths tutoring up to GCSE. Secondary maths students are taught in pairs or small groups. 11+ children are taught in small groups. Regular weekly lesson feedback is provided to parents. Children are routinely assessed to establish their levels of progress. 11+ tutoring prepares students for Devonport High School (Boys), Devonport High School (Girls), and Plymouth High School (Girls). Maths tutoring uses many of the current elements of the mastery approach up to GCSE.

What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Eleven-plus and GCSE mathematics preparation is the service that runs through the accounts left for this Plymouth tutor, with Tom named repeatedly as the person families credit for their children's progress. Customers writing about their orders describe how he puts pupils at ease, using a relaxed approach that turns lessons into something children look forward to rather than a chore. A number of reviews mention small groups, which they say allow plenty of individual attention and keep children engaged and focused, while a further theme is the feedback provided after each session, giving parents clear points to work on at home and a way of tracking progress.

Confidence-building comes up often, with quieter pupils growing in self-assurance and going on to achieve strong results in the eleven-plus and GCSE examinations, including a grade A. Parents also value the flexibility shown when circumstances changed, with a switch to online learning handled smoothly, and the encouragement and good humour that keep pupils motivated across the academic year. Both mathematics and eleven-plus preparation are covered, and the same families often return with younger siblings.

Tom has been an outstanding 11+ tutor. His calm, friendly approach made our daughter love learning and she always looked forward to her weekly lessons. She grew in confidence, made great progress, and was genuinely sad when the exams — and her sessions with Tom — came to an end. Our two younger children have already asked for him to be their tutor when it’s their turn, which says it all. We couldn’t recommend Tom more highly!

My daughter’s experience with TCTutoring11Plus is absolutely positive. She’s been supported, all the way through year 5 until the date she sat the 11plus exams, with dedication and the expertise of a great teacher. She enjoyed her tutoring session in learning new things in a very understandable way. Session by session she learnt how to manage her time available to complete English and maths papers making sure to answer all the questions. My daughter did very well in her 11plus exams, obtaining an high score and she reserved her place in a grammar school.

Attending weekly sessions with Tom helped my son to confidently pass the 11 plus. We were kept informed about what was happening in the sessions with weekly updates and homework expectations were reasonable, making it possible to keep going through the year without the tutoring feeling overly burdensome. Tom is friendly, experienced and well organised and we always felt that our son was in good hands as he prepared for this important milestone.

Great tutoring services, my daughter felt confident enough to ask questions to better understanding and the sessions were always set at a suitable pace for her but still challenged her. Provided many papers closer to exam season which helped to aid her revision effectively.

Tom is an excellent tutor . When my son started he was lacking confidence with maths . Tom’s relaxed tutoring style allowed his confidence to grow and he has just done really well in his GCSE . There is timely feedback . Tom is very flexible and switched to online learning when needed . I can not recommend Tom more highly .

Our son had 11 plus tuition with Tom for the 2023/24 academic year. He enjoyed the lessons very much and achieved a grade A. Feedback after every lesson was helpful to keep track on things. We thoroughly recommend Tom for tuition.
